About this book

De unge Aar by Danish author Harald Herdal, published by Gyldendal in Copenhagen in 1945.

First edition, from a stated print run of only 3,000 copies. The copyright page reads “Oplag: 3000 Eksemplarer” and identifies Aksel Jørgensen as the designer of the original cover.

An autobiographical novel depicting Herdal’s youth, including his upbringing in a working-class Copenhagen neighborhood and experiences as a young laborer. The 1945 edition is the second volume in Herdal’s autobiographical Barndom sequence. Danish bibliographic records identify this as the original 1945 edition, with the second edition not appearing until 1963.

This copy has been professionally/privately rebound, preserving the original publication inside an attractive three-quarter black leather binding with decorative striped paper boards, leather corners, raised spine bands and gilt-lettered title/author labels.

Exterior shows light-to-moderate age and shelf wear, including rubbing at corners and edges. Spine remains attractive with gilt lettering clearly visible. Interior appears clean and well preserved with normal age toning. Binding appears sound.

Please review all photographs for exact condition.

A distinctive collectible copy for collectors of Danish literature, Scandinavian books, Harald Herdal, postwar European literature, fine/rebound books, and decorative bindings.
