About this book

Hillingdon Hall; or, The Cockney Squire

By Robert Smith Surtees

John C. Nimmo, London, 1888

Hardcover in original decorated red cloth

Scarce Victorian sporting novel in the 1888 first illustrated edition, with illustrations by Wildrake, Heath and Jellicoe.

This edition was issued with 12 hand-colored plates and 519 pages, and is documented by the Morgan Library as the first illustrated edition. Christie’s describes the same 1888 Nimmo issue as the second edition in book form.

Original red cloth binding with gilt pictorial decoration to the front board and gilt decoration and lettering to the spine.

A classic piece of Victorian sporting literature centered on country life, fox hunting, horses, English society, and Surtees’ comic character Mr. Jorrocks.

Condition: Good overall antique condition. Original cloth shows age-related rubbing, fading, edge wear, and wear at the spine ends and corners. Gilt decoration remains attractive. Interior shows normal age toning and occasional spotting. Tissue guards and color plates are present as shown. Binding appears sound from the photos provided. See photos for full condition details.
