Drouot-Richelieu, Paris
March 7, 2009
French-language illustrated auction catalog

Distinctive catalog from the sale of material from the collection of René Alleau, the French historian and writer known for his work on symbolism, alchemy, occult sciences, and esoteric traditions.

The catalog covers an unusually strong mix of Surrealism and esotericism, including first editions, illustrated books, rare periodicals, manuscripts, autograph letters, photographs, drawings, and occult material. The sale was handled with Claude Oterelo as expert and Jean-Claude Bailly assisting with esotericism and early books. (Auction Art Rémy Le Fur & Associés)

The cover reproduces a fascinating 1953 letter headed “Qui est Medium?”, giving the catalog a strong visual connection to the world of postwar French Surrealism.

This is a useful specialist reference for collectors interested in André Breton-era Surrealism, alchemy, occultism, hermetic traditions, rare books, manuscripts, and historic Paris auction catalogs.

Best fit for: occult and esoteric book collectors, Surrealism collectors, rare-book dealers, bibliophiles, researchers, and collectors of French auction catalogs.

Major hook: René Alleau collection catalog combining Surrealism, alchemy, occultism, manuscripts, and rare books.

Condition: Very Good overall. Cover remains attractive with light normal shelf and handling wear. Binding appears sound. No major damage seen. See photos for full condition details.
