An original 1915 memoir of United States Supreme Court Justice Henry Billings Brown.
Brown began his legal career in Detroit and served as a federal judge for the Eastern District of Michigan before joining the Supreme Court. He is best known as the author of the majority opinion in Plessy v. Ferguson, the decision that upheld state-enforced racial segregation under the “separate but equal” doctrine.
The book is partly autobiographical. Brown prepared his own life sketch, while his longtime friend Charles A. Kent added material from Brown’s diaries, letters, personal papers, legal career, and final years.
This copy has an old pencil note on the copyright page. It appears to include the word “Burton” and the phrase “Estate Frank J. Hecker.” Hecker was a major Detroit industrialist, civic leader, and art collector closely connected with Charles Lang Freer.
