A striking 1930 art book devoted to Virgil’s descent into the underworld.
The book reproduces fourteen woodcut images from Sebastian Brant’s famous illustrated Virgil, printed in Strassburg in 1502. The scenes show Aeneas, the Sibyl, Charon, Cerberus, Anchises, funeral rites, battles, and other parts of Virgil’s underworld story.
Anna Cox Brinton, Professor of Archaeology at Mills College, supplied the foreword and notes. The book was issued during the festival marking two thousand years since Virgil’s birth.
This is the original 1930 Stanford publication. It is not a 1502 book, and the images are reproductions of the early woodcuts.
The original brown folding case is still present. This case is part of the publisher’s issue, not later packing material.
