About this book

Brideshead Revisited

The Sacred and Profane Memories of Captain Charles Ryder

By Evelyn Waugh

Little, Brown and Company, Boston, 1945

First American Book Club edition

Red cloth hardcover with original dust jacket

351 pages

An important early American edition of Evelyn Waugh’s best-known novel.

This 1945 Book-of-the-Month Club issue is a rare publishing exception. The book club issue appeared before Little, Brown’s regular 1946 trade edition. It is therefore widely accepted as the first American printing.

The book has the correct 1945 date on the title page, 1944 and 1945 copyright dates, red cloth binding, and original unpriced pictorial dust jacket. The jacket artwork is by Lester M. Peterson.

Brideshead Revisited follows Charles Ryder and his deep ties to the wealthy Catholic Flyte family. The novel deals with memory, love, faith, loss, and the decline of the old English upper class.

Major hook: First American printing in its original Lester M. Peterson dust jacket.
