A detailed history of the early liberal feminist movement in France. The book covers women’s rights, suffrage, education, work, law, religion, and political organizing from 1858 through 1889.

This copy came from the collection of Professor Lemuel A. Johnson, a noted poet, critic, and University of Michigan professor. A collection stamp states that the book was donated by Marian A. Johnson. A handwritten name and 1983 date appear above the stamp. The writing appears connected to Lemuel Johnson, but it has not been authenticated.

The book also carries Braun-Brumfield stamps reading “Authorized Item” and “Not for Sale.” Braun-Brumfield was an Ann Arbor book printer and manufacturer.

Best fit for scholars and collectors of French history, women’s studies, feminism, suffrage, social movements, and University of Michigan history.

Major hook: First-edition academic study with Professor Lemuel A. Johnson collection provenance and Ann Arbor printing marks.
